Lecture and
photographic slide presentation on the subject of pioneer travel
along the famed “Oregon California Trail.” This program
will feature Oregon California Trails Association (OCTA) member
Frank Tortorich.
Mr. Tortorich
will illustrate and guide us in detail the difficult hardships
of early pioneer families and mountain men from all walks of
life and their hazardous experiences walking or riding along the
dusty trails of the North Fork Platt River in the 1830’s to the
1870’s. You are welcome to journey along with us as an
armchair adventurer leaving Independence or Saint Joe, Missouri
and travel along the North Fork Platt River, past Independence
Rock, then struggle over South Pass, Wyoming in the Rocky
Mountains, at a 7550 elevation. (Trivia: Why did they call it
Independence Rock?)
From there,
several options were available for the tired pioneer travelers.
They could split off from the Oregon and California trail to
other trails and make their way over to the Willamette Valley in
Oregon or into the California Sierra Nevada Mountains and maybe
to Sonora.
Please join
us. We’ll have an extra log on the fire for you!
The program
will be held at the Tuolumne County Public Library Community
Meeting Room at 480 Greenley Road in Sonora. There is plenty of
free parking and the library is handicap accessible.
Refreshments will be served. |

54th Annual Lamplight Dinner.
Mother Lode Fairgrounds, Manzanita Bldg. 5:30pm Social Hour,
6:30pm Dinner. Hales and Symons Program presented by Mark
Bergstrom. $30.00 per person. (No refund after April
3rd).
Click here for the form to mail in to send in your
reservations.
The 54th Annual Lamplight Dinner
will be held at a new location this year - Mother
Lode Fairgrounds, Manzanita Building. This isn’t the first time
the Lamplight Dinner has been held at the fairgrounds. The
tradition began in 1959 - 1970,and again 1980 - 1982, when the
“third annual dinner was moved to the
fairgrounds in Sonora which had a hall capable of serving 398
dinners; however, even then some members and their guests could
not be accommodated. For some years following there was always a
waiting list in the event of last minute cancellations,”
according to the CHISPA, “The First 40 Years of the
Tuolumne County Historical Society” by Mary Etta Segerstrom.

The theme for the event will be
honoring the 100 year history of Hales and Symons - 1898 - 1998.
Originally supplying feed and hay to teamsters coming into
Sonora, the company later sold lumber, hardware, propane and
even appliances. Guest speaker Mark Bergstrom will give a
PowerPoint presentation on his recollections of growing up in
Sonora and show historic photos of Hales and Symons. Mr.
Bergstrom will share stories from some of the longtime employees
and Irving Symons. Mark Bergstrom, a native
of Tuolumne County, has 32 years of executive management
experience, serving 20 years in rail and bus management
consulting throughout the U. S. and internationally. For the
past 12 years he has served in non-profit management positions
in land, coldwater fisheries and waterfowl habitat conservation.
While working at Sonora Area Foundation, Mr. Bergstrom launched
a successful program to provide needed food, shelter, clothing
and energy for the County’s at-risk population. Mr. Bergstrom’s
two children, Matt and Kate are both currently working in New
York City. |

Sonora's Jewish
Families - Presented by Pat Perry
The original
Tuolumne County Historical Society program scheduled for May
28th is being rescheduled. In its place we are fortunate to
have Sonora City Historian Pat Perry who will be making a
presentation on Sonora's Jewish families who lived here in the
1800s, and early 1900s. Pat has done extensive research on the
Jewish Cemetery in Sonora and will incorporate some of that
information in her talk. She has been in contact
with descendants of many of these families who have generously
contributed photographs. This should be an interesting program
on a little known community who made important contributions to
Sonora's history.
The program will be
held at the Tuolumne County Public Library Community Meeting
Room at 480 Greenley Road in Sonora. There is plenty of
free parking and the library is handicap accessible.
Refreshments will be served. |

Rogers Locomotive.
Kim Baker, Railtown 1897 State Park Superintendent and George
Sapp, Restoration Specialist will present a program showing the
process
of preservation of one of its
most famous steam engines, a Rogers Locomotive— No.
3—”The Movie Queen.” Photos of work accomplished and history
over the life of the engine will be covered and its appearances
in feature movies ( High
Noon,
Back to the Future III)
and television series (Petticoat Junction,
Bonanza and Little
House on the Prairie).
In 2007-2008, an enor-mous effort
began to raise funds to fully rehabilitate No. 3. The 1891 steam
engine is being completely restored to its period of
significance being defined by the 1929 configuration, as
it appeared in the film “The Virginian.”
The program will be
held at the Tuolumne County Public Library Community Meeting
Room at 480 Greenley Road in Sonora. There is plenty of
